Spotlight: medical research at Monash
Welcome to Spotlight, a publication that highlights areas of research within Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Each edition focuses on a theme, highlighting advances being made and the people making them.
Vascular biology research
- The Spring edition provides examples of vascular health research. Vascular health encompasses heart and blood vessel diseases. Coronary heart disease is predicted to become the world’s leading public health problem by 2020. To tackle this important issue, Monash vascular health researchers are taking an approach that is broader than bench-to-bedside and encompasses discovery, development, clinical innovation and analysis of vascular health. Sructural biology research
-
This edition focuses on how the faculty is starting to use the recenlty opened Australian Synchrotron and takes a more detailed look at prominent structural biology research. By understanding the precise shape of a molecule, structural biologists gain an understanding of normal function and how abnormal function can lead to disease. The Australian Synchrotron will greatly facilitate this research. Spotlight: Medical Research at Monash, Volume 2, Winter 2007.pdf (208 kb)
Public health research
- This issue focuses on social and public health research taking place within the faculty. The excellence and breadth of this research is driven by local and international collaborations. By providing an evidence base for health care, determining risk associated with recycled water use and establishing new research networks, Monash researchers are making significant contributions the Australian community. Cancer research
- In this issue the focus is on the bench-to-bedside approach to cancer research within the faculty. By understanding cancer biology, developing new therapies and identifying environmental and social factors that improve clinical care, Monash cancer researchers aim to improve the lives of cancer sufferers in Australia and throughout the world.
