Dr Sharon Flecknoe is a member of the Department of Physiology and is interested in the development and maturation of fetal and postnatal lungs. Her research mainly focuses on determining the factors that regulate the differentiation of alveolar epithelial cells during fetal and postnatal life. In addition, Dr Flecknoe is involved in a range of studies which investigate the effects of premature birth, prenatal corticosteroids, postnatal ventilation and physical stretch on the growth and development of the lung. More recently, Dr Flecknoe became involved in studies which aim to improve the strategies used to ventilate preterm infants. These studies are likely to lead to enhanced survival of preterm babies and decreased damage to the immature lung.
