Background

Roger Evans is a Senior Research Fellow (NHMRC Australia) and Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology, Monash University.
Roger obtained his PhD in pharmacology (Monash University) in 1988 from studies of the neuroendocrine actions of opioids. He subsequently moved to the Baker Institute and then to the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne to study the neural mechanisms involved in the haemodynamic responses to hypovolaemia, with Professor John Ludbrook (1988-1992). In 1992 he returned to the Baker Institute to study the role of the kidney in the development of hypertension, with Professor Warwick Anderson. In 1996 he moved to Monash University.
Roger’s current interests include oxygen regulation in the kidney, neural regulation of kidney function and the impact of poverty on the aetiology of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Roger is Co-Editor-in-Chief (with Professor Ding-Feng Su, Shanghai) of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology and a member of the steering committee of the Rishi Valley Vascular Disease Project (an epidemiological study of cardiovascular disease in rural India). He has published more than 130 scientific papers.

  1. Leong, Anderson, O’Connor & Evans (2007) Evidence that renal arterial-venous oxygen shunting contributes to dynamic regulation of renal oxygenation. Am J Physiol (Renal Physiol) 292: F1726-F1733.
    Here we provide the first evidence that the amount of oxygen shunted from arteries to veins changes with the level of blood flow in the kidney, and that this helps prevent changes in tissue oxygen delivery.

  2. Burke, Head, Lambert & Evans (2007) Renal sympathetic neuroeffector function in renovascular and angiotensin II-dependent hypertension in rabbits. Hypertension 49: 932-938.

    We showed how the functions of the renal sympathetic nerves are altered in hypertension caused by activation of the renin/angiotensin system. Our results suggest that the circulation in the inner part of the kidney (medulla) becomes sensitive to the effects of renal nerve activation and that this could contribute to the development of hypertension in these models.

  3. Fitzgerald, Bashari, Cox, Parkington & Evans (2007) Contributions of endothelium-derived relaxing factors to control of hindlimb blood flow in the mouse in vivo. Am J Physiol (Heart Circ Physiol) 293: H1072-H1082.

    These studies demonstrate that the ability of the vascular endothelium to cause blood vessels in the mouse hindlimb to dilate is mediated by a complex interplay between two factors; nitric oxide and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor.

Current Projects for Honours and PhD students

  1. Regulation of intrarenal oxygenation. We have developed a working hypothesis of how shunting of oxygen from arteries to veins in the kidney allows this organ to fulfill its multiple functions without experiencing dangerous changes in oxygen levels. We are using multiple approaches to tackle this problem, including unbiased stereology (to show how arteries and veins are arranged in the kidney), experiments in anaesthetized rabbits and rats (to show how oxygen levels are regulated in the kidney) and mathematical modeling (to perform ‘virtual’ experiments that would otherwise be impossible and to develop a working model of control of intrarenal oxygenation).

  2. Effects of obesity on kidney function. An epidemic of obesity is sweeping the developed World. We now know that obesity is one of the major causes of high blood pressure. We also know that the kidney is the major organ that controls blood pressure in the long term. In this project we are investigating how obesity alters the control of kidney function by nerves and hormones. We use a rabbit model of high fat feeding. This project is part of an international collaboration between researchers here at Monash, at the Baker Heart Research Institute in Prahran, and in New Zealand, the United States and Switzerland.

  3. Vascular disease in rural India. My collaborators at the Baker Heart Research Institute (Dr Mandy Thrift, Dr Sharyn Fitzgerald) and Monash Medical Centre (Dr Velandai Srikanth) and I have commenced a surveillance study of vascular disease in rural southern India (The Rishi Valley Vascular Disease Survey). Students could be involved in the collection, analysis and interpretation of these data, which we expect will show how the health of this population can be improved.
