Associate Professor Elmer V Villanueva
Associate Professor Villanueva holds an ScM (Epidemiology) from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and an MD and BS (Biology) from the De La Salle University. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health (UK) for contributions to health services research and technology assessment and is a member of the American College of Epidemiology.
Associate Professor Elmer V Villanueva is responsible for the establishment of a population health research program, participates in the development of regional population health research activity, and coordinates a program to build research capacity amongst rural and remote health researchers.
Prior to his appointment to the Gippsland Medical School, Associate Professor Villanueva was most recently the Epidemiologist of the National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) where he oversaw data monitoring, surveillance and genetics and population health research strategies. His role focused on the development and implementation of a coherent approach to the understanding of the impact of national and international research and policies on Australians diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. He provided advice and direction on relevant research and surveillance across the entire spectrum of these diseases, from risk and prevention to clinical management and supportive care.
Associate Professor Villanueva has held senior research posts at the Monash Institute of Health Services Research (including the Deputy Directorship of Health Technology Assessment Unit), and research positions at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and the Baltimore Cochrane Center in the United States. He has primary qualifications in general medicine but his research focus is in the organization of health services using statistical process control methodology, epidemiologic methodology, biostatistics, and evidence-based medicine. His research interests encompass a wide range of fields including outcomes and health services research, systematic review and meta-analysis methodology, the design of diagnostic test studies, and decision analysis. He has been invited to speak before international audiences on evidence-based medicine. He is deeply committed to Open Access publishing of results and serves as an Associate Editor to the Cumulative Index to Statistics, as Epidemiologist to the BioMed Central range of journals, Editorial Board Member for BMC Public Health and BMC Medical Research Methodology and Advisor to the Public Library of Science.
