Summary
The CosMIC study is a collaborative study between the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and the National Stroke Research Institute. The aim of this project is to determine the costs and quality of life associated with myocardial infarction (heart attack) and heart failure to the Australian community. This is a prospective multi-center cohort study recruiting 140 first-time in a lifetime myocardial infarction patients and 180 heart failure patients from 11 hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne. The study aims to collect not only direct costs associated by the treatment of the patient, but also indirect costs associated with their disease, eg loss of patient income. Furthermore, this project will assess not only costs associated with a patient's acute admission to hospital, but also the downstream (12 months) costs associated with their disease. Research from this project feeds into the CHD Prevention model by allowing the determination of the potential cost and quality of life savings from preventing myocardial infarction and heart failure.
