Student Project Cases

Student Project Cases (SPCs) are an innovative learning activity throgh which students build on their Patient Centred Learning (PCL) experiences across the previous 3.5 semesters of the new five-year medical curriculum. As a result of this activity, students will prepare their own case presentations, scheduled to take place at the end of Semester 4, 2003.

Eight designated SPC topics have been integrated into the Semester 4 curriculum, and each student will participate in all SPCs.

Students work in teams at many levels to:

  • research topics of relevance to the case (within guidelines provided)
  • make decisions regarding the overall organisation, scope, depth and breadth of sub-topics
  • integrate their material and present the final work

SPC groups of three students prepare an oral presentation, with visual aids, on various aspects of the assigned topic, emphasising this integration. They are encouraged to use:

  • conventional seminar/lecture presentation
  • alternative presentation formats
  • panel discussion or round table commentaries
  • role playing (eg interviews with "experts" or patient-doctor interactions)

In addition, activities have been devised for the student audience during each SPC presentation, to ensure participation by all students in attendance. This encourages responsibility for self-directed learning, development of communication skills, and promotes peer-learning activity.

The management of the development of SPCs is under the direction of:

Professor Phillip Nagley (Dept of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), assisted by
Dr Janet Macaulay (Dept of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)

They are supported by a core working group comprising:
Dr Jane Tracy (Centre for Developmental Disability Health Victoria)
Dr Hugo Hygens (School of Rural Health)
Ms Jennifer Lindley (Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education)
Ms Robyn Hill (Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education)
